Description
The ancient parish church of Santa Maria is in the main square of the town of Preci.
It has a gabled façade with oculus of the 18th century and two windows; the portal features figurative capitals and foliage, which show a roughly geometric interpretation of the gothic style and should be dated to the 14th century. The right side is completely hidden by the war memorial; the left is embellished by a fifteenth century portal (the ogive belongs to the 14th century church). The outer wall presents various fragmentary inscriptions and coats of arms, including a cardinal one of Crescenzi.
The bell tower presents an 18th century crown, which was later modified, while the apse is polygonal. The structure and floor are entirely in stone. The roof, in wood and brick, is held up by arches in the nave and by a vault above the presbytery.
The interior is a single nave with side chapels, renovated in the early 17th century. The modern altar is held up by two lions, perhaps originating from the façade; the altar-piece with the Trinity (18th century) replaces the triptych by Mariotto da Cristofano, stolen in 1971.
